Present state of Plovdiv

Plovdiv is the second largest city in Bulgaria after the capital. It is situated in the Thracian Valley, occupying a territory of six hills which determine its specific view. Plovdiv rivals Sofia in the development of its infrastructure, its places for entertainment, landmarks and cultural heritage. The Plovdiv International Fair, which has brought so much popularity to the city, is held twice a year in the northern part of Plovdiv. Consumer goods and commodities, as well as industrial goods are presented at the Fair. Annually a great number of folklore and art festivals take place in Plovdiv.

Cultural heritage of Plovdiv

There is evidence that the territory of today’s Plovdiv has been inhabited since the Stone Age. Every time when the town was conquered by a different ruler, its name was changed.
During the Revival period Plovdiv was a cultural and political centre and spread over a territory of three hills. The authentic atmosphere of the Old town of Plovdiv has been preserved to a great degree and attracts visitors from all over the world who take some interest in Bulgarian culture. The ancient houses’ architecture is typical of the Revival period. Most of the houses have been turned into museums and galleries in which you have the rare opportunity to enter the totally different world of the people of the 18th century. In the Old Town you can visit many churches with exceptionally beautiful icons and decoration dating back to 15-19 c.
